Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic said on Thursday that Serbia's NATO accession is not a prerequisite of its EU accession. "As far as the question whether NATO accession is a prerequisite of EU accession, the answer is very clear - no," Djelic said in the Serbian parliament. "NATO not prerequisite for EU accession" He was responding to a question from Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Cedomir Jovanovic, who wanted to know if Serbian officials discussed Russia's stance on Serbia joining the Alliance with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Djelic added that this has been confirmed to Serbian officials by representatives of several countries, including the U.S. "Most countries that have joined the EU also jointed NATO, but their experience in the Cold War was different, and they also were not bombed. Serbia joined the Partnership for Peace program and our country will continue to have relations with NATO through that program," Djelic said. He also noted that "Russia is in no way worried" about Serbia's future in the EU, reminding that Russia launched a European security initiative, appealing that differences be overcome and unity found on the issue.
