The ambassadors of African countries presented a protest note to Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, because of a recent statement of Cedomir Jovanovic. Jovanovic, who is LDP party leader and head of its parliamentary group, referred to African people as "cannibals", Beta news agency reports. African ambassadors receive apology The speaker condemned Jovanovic's statement, stressing that it does not represent the stand of the people of Serbia, the Serbian parliament, her personal stand, nor does it represent the essence of relations between Serbia and African and Arab countries, read a statement from parliament. The delegation comprised the ambassadors of Algeria, Abdelkhader Mesdoua, Palestine, Mohammed Khalil Nabhan, and Guinea, Mohamed Issiaga Kourouma. "We are convinced that the disputed statement does not represent the stand of either the Republic of Serbia, or the Serbian parliament, or a personal stand of the parliament speaker, and we are convinced that it will not happen again," said Ambassador Mesdoua, stressing that African countries demand that the statement made in parliament be officially denied in that same parliament. The ambassadors then met with the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Cedomir Jovanovic, who apologized to them. Addressing reporters afterwards, Jovanovic said that his "cannibal" statement was misinterpreted, and that he was "sorry if someone recognized" that it was meant to insult nations and states, "since that was not the case". The LDP party leader said the statement was directed at Serbia's foreign policy, "which turns its head away from the plight of civilians in Libya". Jovanovic said that when he accused FM Vuk Jeremic of "traveling to cannibals in Africa", this was a political criticism of the minister's work, and added: "I'll memorize the word 'cannibalism' well, and then I think I'll forget it".
