The first effects of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue will be political ones on Serbia’s path toward the EU, media from Pristina report. “Situation is very complicated for Kosovo because five countries do not recognize it,” Pristina-based daily Zeri reports quoting international sources. Pristina daily: Belgrade benefits from dialogue “Some benefits would help President Boris Tadic and powers around him win another mandate in the next elections in Serbia,” the daily added. The daily also quoted anonymous international sources that state that the international community “wants to see Serbia oriented toward Brussels and not toward Moscow, since it is afraid that old political powers might return to power”. On the other hand, possible benefits for Kosovo during the first phase of the dialogue could be solutions for some issues related to trade and transport. “Symbols and stamps of the state of Kosovo are unacceptable for Belgrade right now but international representatives expect flexibility from the Serbian side from which some symbolic steps regarding Kosovo will be expected in the first phase,” Zeri pointed out. While Serbia is counting on getting the EU candidate status, Kosovo might face serious problems and might have to decide whether to continue or stop the negotiations. “The fact that five EU member states do not recognize Kosovo could be a potential risk of isolating Kosovo and Kosovo cannot insist on asking for recognitions during the process. Also, determination to insist that Kosovo gets at least visa liberalization as a ‘reward’ for constructiveness in the dialogue with Belgrade is not visible,” the international sources were quoted as saying. Kosovo also faces a lack of internal political consensus regarding the dialogue, the daily wrote. “The opposition does not support the dialogue and it will represent a ‘burden’ for the future of the process. It will be necessary that Kosovo side is united during a period when north Kosovo and parallel structures will be discussed,” the international sources told the daily.
