The opposition SNS party has denied a report in a Belgrade daily today that it had hired a former U.S. ambassador in Belgrade. The Blic newspaper writes that William Montgomery was hired to help leader Tomislav Nikolic improve the party's image, for a salary of EUR 7,500. Opposition party denies hiring ex-U.S. envoy The daily cites its American sources, who said the former ambassador would work to improve the image of the party - an offshoot of the Serb Radicals (SRS) - in the U.S. and EU, but also to help them win elections in Serbia. The Serb Progressive Party (SNS) is untested in parliamentary elections, but has consistently topped opinion polls as one of the country's most popular, along with the ruling Democrats (DS). The newspaper today quotes a form that it said Montgomery had filled out in his role as a U.S. lobbyist hired by foreigners, which said he would help SNS win in local and national level elections, through a democratic process. SNS official Zorana Mihajlovic-Milanovic reacted to the article on Friday by saying it amounted to a "manhunt against the party", organized by "the regime and regime's slaves". She also denied that the party had signed a contract with Montgomery, or paid him any money.
