Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic and Public Information Commissioner Rodoljub Sabic have condemned the attacks on Anti-Corruption Council President Verica Barac. They have stated that the attacks are an attempt to exert pressure on control bodies to give up on combat against corruption. Attacks on Anti-Corruption Council chief condemned Jankovic and Sabic said in a joint statement that the attacks on Barac, such as a report in daily Vecernje novosti, were an attempt to pressure the control bodies into giving up on investigations into corrpution and other illegal acts that incurr damages to citizens. “Calling Verica Barac names and allusions to 'an octopus which drinks knowledge out of people and spreads deception' is an attempt to prevent them from seeing the real octopuses that keep the society and its institutions in a grasp which is seriously endangering its survival,“ Sabic and Jankovic stressed. In their opinion, it is especially dangerous if media owners are hiding behind journalistic comments and are actually protecting their own personal interests. “Free work of institutions that control the work of the state bodies and protect the citizens' rights is everywhere, including Serbia, of vital importance for establishment of authorities' responsibility, protection of rights and interests of the citizens and strengthening of the rule of law,“ they pointed out in the announcement. Vecernje novosti yesterday published an article titled “Who is Barac advising“ which was signed with the daily's initials. Rodoljub Sabic and Sasa Jankovic hold a press conference (FoNet)
