Teachers’ unions, govt. reach agreement

The Serbian government and the education trade unions reached an agreement late Friday and urged schools to start working normally again starting from Monday. After the meeting, Education Minister Zarko Obradovic said the agreement between the government and trade unions would not cause inflation or disturb the macroeconomic trends. Teachers’ unions, govt. reach agreement Secretary General of Union of Education Workers of Serbia Hadzi Zdravko Kovac said that the compromise solution had been reached with certain sacrifices made on both sides. Obradovic told the reporters that jubilee awards and severance pays would be paid to teachers and that wages of all public sector employees and pensions would be increased thanks to the expected increase in budget revenues. “I call on all employees to return to schools on Monday,” he pointed out. Education trade union President Branislav Pavlovic said that income of the public sector workers and pensioners would be additionally increased in accordance with the increase in the state budget revenues. He explained that the government representatives expected the budget revenues to be two-three percent higher than planned. “Every strike needs to end at some point, otherwise it has no purpose,” Pavlovic pointed out. The Association of Education Workers' Union (USPRS) did not sign the agreement and will decide on Sunday whether its members will return to work or not. Zarko Obradovic
