Blank resignation letters could soon become a thing of the past because the government is preparing amendments to the law on the election of parliament members. The amendments, if adopted, will transfer control of MP mandates from the parties to the MPs themselves. Head of parliamentary group For European Serbia Nada Kolundzija told Tanjug that the blank resignation letters were a consequence of a discrepancy between the Constitution and certain regulations and could be removed by those amendments. “It is enough to add that no one but the MPs themselves can resign in their name,” she explained. However, the amendments should also deal with the possibility of MPs changing sides and include measures to prevent that. The European Commission (EC) warned about the blank resignation letters in its report on Serbia's progress in EU integration. The agreement to end the practice came after a meeting between representatives of the government coalition and Serbian parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic. The 2006 Constitution says that MPs are free to place their mandates at the disposal of their party.
