It would be a great mistake by the authorities to repeat the April 17 elections for the Bosniak ethnic council, says Muamer Zukorlic. This, because it would allow the elected council to deal with issues not regulated by law, the head of one of the Islamic communities - the Islamic Community in Serbia - stated on Wednesday. Mufti: Mistake to repeat council elections "The council formed by the Bosniak Cultural Community with the help of two members of the Bosniak Revival is working fine," Zukorlic noted. That is why the Bosniaks (Muslims) will not vote in repeated elections, he asserted. "Bosniaks' God given rights need no recognition by authorities," Zukorlic continued. "Bosniaks were not recognized until 1974. From 1974 they were treated as an ethnic group, but based on their religion, he said, alluding to the time when Muslims were defined as a nationality in the former Yugoslavia. The Bosniak community was not recognized even after that." However, he would be even more concerned if the government recognized the Bosniaks, because it would mean complete assimilation, he said. "We will continue unrecognized because we are better off that way... Bosniaks in Serbia are a native and constituent nation," Zukorlic argued. Speaking about an autonomy for Sandzak, an area in Serbia's southwestern Raska District, where Muslims make up a considerable part of the population, Zukorlic said it could not be won at any desk in Belgrade, but had to be born and nurtured in the heart and mind. According to him, the authorities have had a decade to show they could provide equality for the Bosniaks, but they have changed nothing. Muamer Zukorlic (Tanjug file)
