Czech President Vaclav Klaus is visiting Belgrade today, where he has received a charter of his acceptance into the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU). Upon his arrival in Belgrade, Klaus first conferred with Serbian President Boris Tadic, who also attended the ceremony at the SANU. Czech President Vaclav Klaus visits Serbia Tadic thanked Klaus for his country's support to Serbia's European integration, and referred to the Czech president as a great friend of Serbia. According to a statement from his office, Tadic and Klaus discussed bilateral and economic relations, and Tadic thanked the Czech Republic for its support to Serbia's European integration. Vaclav Klaus later on Thursday received a certificate of foreign membership in the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU). The document was presented by SANU President Nikola Hajdin. Klaus also held a lecture about the transformation of Serbia and the Czech Republic, stressing that his country supported Serbia's EU integration. Klaus, a long-time EU skeptic, noted he understood some countries' desire to join the EU, but added that they sometimes neglected issues within the EU, as well as its values, like freedom, democracy and tolerance. The SANU ceremony was attended by the country's top officials, including Tadic, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic. The Czech president is also scheduled to launch the Serbian translation of his book "Europe and the EU - A View of a Politician and Economist" later today. Klaus previously visited Belgrade in 2008, Novi Sad (northern Serbia) in 2009, and conferred with Tadic at the United Nations in 2010. He has criticized NATO attacks against Serbia in 1999, and voiced his disapproval of the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration of independence made three years ago.
