Hungary took over the EU presidency from Belgium at a ceremony in Budapest yesterday. Hungarian PM Viktor Orban says that the EU should offer Serbia a clear European perspective. "EU should offer clear perspective to Serbia" Belgian PM Yves Leterme has welcomed the Hungarian presidency program and pointed out that it was possible to build strong Europe with economic growth and opening of new jobs. “It is in the interest of the entire EU, and especially central Europe, that the Balkan region be consolidated and made stable, and this is why Hungarian presidency over the EU supports Croatia's EU membership, Bulgaria's and Romania’s accession into the Schengen zone, and in the meantime Serbia should be offered a clear European perspective,” the Hungarian PM said in Budapest, following a meeting with European Commission Chairman Jose Manuel Barroso. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton wished Hungary success in its EU presidency during her meeting with Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi. “I’ve been working closely with Minister Martonnyi since the moment it was decided that Hungary would take over the EU presidency. We have especially discussed security and defense issues,” she pointed out. Hungary’s first tasks will be negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program in Istanbul, the Eastern Partnership program and mediation in partition of Sudan.
