EULEX prepares "special unit in for north"

EULEX Spokesman Hanns-Christian Klasing said on Tuesday that the mission had formed a special police unit to be in charge of northern Kosovo. Klasing told Tanjug that, although the unit had been formed in November, the recruiting of the staff was still underway. EULEX prepares "special unit in for north" The unit was established to fight organized crime and other serious forms of crime, particularly in Kosovo's north, he pointed out. The EULEX spokesman stressed that the unit, comprising a staff of about twenty persons, besides police officers also included "prosecutors and customs officers", and added that the idea was that serious crimes were dealt by professionals. He noted that the unit had experts trained to combat money laundering, while the main focus was on fighting drug and human trafficking. Klasing expressed his belief that the combination of prosecutors and police officers should make the task force quite efficient. Klasing said the unit was already operational, but added that several more people should join it soon. In the interest of the investigation, he did not specify which cases the unit is currently working on, but said they were working on several criminal cases in the fields he had mentioned. The EULEX spokesperson added that the special EU police unit was cooperating with local police, while the tasks were being given by EULEX prosecution.
