“Serbia capable of conducting investigation”

Serbia’s War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukčević has stated that the Serbian judiciary is capable of conducting the human organ trade investigation.

Serbia’s War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic has stated that the Serbian judiciary is capable of conducting the human organ trade investigation. “The investigation can be conducted either by the Serbian judiciary, EULEX or the Albanian [judiciary], or all three of them together,” he said. “Serbia capable of conducting investigation” “The Serbian judiciary is ready, capable and has capacity to try anybody,” the war crimes prosecutor stressed. He repeated that the prosecution had been in charge of the investigation for almost three years, that it had given all documents to Council of Europe (CoE) investigator Dick Marty and launched a pre-trial proceeding. “We have three cases here and if procedural requirements were met, we have capacity to try anybody in Serbia. We also have some limitations, i.e. inability to get to the crime scene and to the suspects of these horrible crimes,” Vukcevic stressed. According to him, it is clear after Marty’s report that one cannot turn a blind eye to such monstrosities, that the crime cannot go unpunished and that everything needs to be thoroughly investigated. The Serbian war crimes prosecutor said that adoption of Marty’s report by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) would enable continuation of the investigation in Serbia, Albania and Kosovo and make all judiciaries in the region work on finding those responsible. “It would be good if the resolution was adopted because this would be recognition of our entire work and Dick Marty’s work in this case,” he pointed out and added that it would give additional importance to the organ trade case in terms of truth and justice for the victims. When asked whether the human organ trade case could be taken over the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Vukcevic said that internationalization of the case would be a good idea but that he was not sure that it was possible, bearing in mind statements of key international factors.
