Ombudsman on Nobel controversy

Serbian <a href="http://www.b92.net/eng/news/politics-article.php?yyyy=2010&mm=12&dd=10&nav_id=71423" class="text-link" target= "_blank">Ombudsman Saša Janković</a> said late on Sunday that there were more good than bad sides to his attendance at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.

Serbian Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic said late on Sunday that there were more good than bad sides to his attendance at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. The ceremony in Oslo, Norway, honored Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. Ombudsman on Nobel controversy Speaking for B92, the ombudsman said he did not betray national interests. “I would not feel comfortable if anyone in China should consider themselves insulted by Serbia or its ombudsman. That was not our intention,” Jankovic said. He noted that this year's Nobel Prize did not go to a state official or a politician, but to an ordinary citizen. Jankovic added that he had thoroughly read the accompanying document and that he could not find any political motive behind the decision. “I tried to do what the rules of my profession envisage. I must not dabble in politics, and I am not a representative of the country's foreign or internal policy,” the ombudsman said and reiterated that the government could not have sent him anywhere. Jankovic noted that he had discussed the current situation with Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic. The ombudsman also said that Jeremic did not at any time say that Jankovic's attendance at the event was contrary to the policy the minister stands for.
