Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor says that the Serbian authorities “can and must” do more in order to arrest Hague indictees Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic. He told Voice of America (VOA) that cooperation with Serbia was good but that it needed to be more active and rigorous in terms of arresting the remaining Hague fugitives. Brammertz: Mladic remains priority Brammertz submitted separate reports on cooperation with the Hague Tribunal to the UN Security Council and recommended ways to improve the cooperation. When asked whether there was a lack of political will in Serbia to make these arrests or whether the problem was inability of the law enforcement agencies, the chief prosecutor repeated his suggestions. “It’s hard for me to say whether it’s a lack of political will. We’re watching what’s happening and what’s not happening in the field and our conclusion is that it can and must do more in order to achieve results,” he stressed. “It is necessary to implement a comprehensive strategy that won’t only apply to operative actions but also to other forms of search. I suggested six months ago to prosecute the fugitives’ helpers and I primarily mean those who were helping Mladic in 2006, those they exactly know. We believe that we would send a strong message to those who are helping Mladic today by catching, prosecuting, convicting and sentencing those who were helping the fugitives in the past,” Brammertz pointed out. Commenting on the position that stronger pressure of the international community was necessary in terms of conditioning Serbia’s EU and possible NATO accession by extradition of Mladic and Hadzic, he said that “it is a historic reality that pressure and encouragement of the international community were key factors of cooperation and arrests”. “As you know, such case was in the EU in October when I said that conditioning was a very important item of each step of the EU enlargement. It was said then that my organization’s reports on the issue would be seriously discussed and that the arrest of Mladic and Hadzic would be the best proof of cooperation,” the Hague Tribunal chief prosecutor explained. “The EU has promised to do this and we are very seriously relying on their support,” Brammertz concluded.
