EULEX Head Xavier Bout de Marnhac told Belgrade-based daily Politika on Saturday that his priority was combat against crime and corruption in Kosovo. “These are the two biggest problems that Kosovo is facing and which affect all communities, but if we want to make serious progress, EULEX needs the support of local institutions,” de Marnhac stressed. EULEX chief: Priority to combat crime, corruption According to him, the incidents in northern Kosovo create huge concern, and the majority of them are caused by Serbs against Serbs. “The number of joint patrols of the Kosovo police and EULEX has increased,” the EULEX chief stressed. “KFOR also increased its presence in the field. Investigations have been launched and I expect certain progress to be made, because, after all, ordinary citizens are the ones who suffer. The authorities in Belgrade and Pristina expressed their support, as well as their hope that the crimes will be solved,” he underscored. “I want these criminals to be caught no matter where they are,” de Marnhac said, pointing out that EULEX was not a political but rather technical mission which only dealt with the issues of the rule of law, whereas judiciary had to be independent and without any political connotations. He said that the role of EULEX in the early elections in Kosovo was to support the Kosovo police with supervision, monitoring and advice during the elections, both in the southern and northern Kosovo. “We have absolute trust that the Kosovo police will perform its tasks on the election day. We expect no problems, but we are fully prepared for any possible scenario,” de Marnhac concluded.
