Serbia’s task in 2011 is to gain an EU candidate status, Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic has stated. He added that other tasks were preservation of peace and stability in the region and establishment of the best possible relations with our neighbors. FM: Candidate status goal for 2011 “Serbia cannot be modern and European if it is not nationally responsible and vice versa,” Jeremic pointed out. Speaking during a ceremony at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he said that “in the years ahead our firm European integration must be accompanied by clear concern for protection of national interests”. The foreign minister confirmed that strategic priorities of Serbia and its partners remain the same, adding that the country’s foreign policy is based on four pillars – the EU, Russia, China and the U.S. “The time ahead of us is extremely interesting for us and the whole world. A new world is being born out of the ashes of the global crisis and we are perhaps witnessing the most radical changes in peacetime policy,” he stressed. Jeremic also pointed out that those who were able to best recognize and approach the new challenges and new responsibilities dictated by the new world would have the advantage over all others and added that it was the job for the new generation of diplomats. “Your task is to devote yourselves to a responsible state work, contribute to new development and progress of the country in the upcoming years with your freshness and your intellect,” the foreign minister concluded.
