War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic said Friday that he believed that an opportunity to arrest Ratko Mladic was missed in 2006. He added that Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz shared his opinion and that the persons responsible would be identified. "Mladic could have been arrested in 2006" Vukcevic told Tanjug news agency that all efforts were focused on the search for Mladic but that any past oversights would certainly be investigated. Commenting on Brammertz's statement that an opportunity to arrest the Hague fugitive was deliberately passed up in 2006, the Serbian war crimes prosecutor said that the investigation into the incident would be fact-based. "In February 2006, in a communication between myself and (head of the Security-Information Agency) Rade Bulatovic, he asked me and the two other people who were with me if any of us would be willing to negotiate with Mladic and I volunteered. That was it, Rade Bulatovic never said that he was in contact with Mladic, but I concluded that he knew where Mladic was," he explained. “When we add to this the fact that at the time Vojislav Kostunica was telling Carla Del Ponte it was a matter of days before Mladic is delivered to the Hague Tribunal, and when Del Ponte called Ollie Rehn and told him the same thing, and from all of those things coinciding, I drew the conclusion that an opportunity was missed to arrest Mladic back then,” the war crimes prosecutor stressed. According to him, the law is very clear: anyone who aided Hague indictees in any way will be brought to justice. Asked if it is possible that someone inside the Security-Information Agency (BIA) is obstructing the arrest without having political support, he said it was not possible today but that he was not sure he could say the same for 2006. “Brammertz is not very involved in operational activities these days. He knows our services are professional and it would be insulting if he were trying to teach us how to do our jobs. He has seen that we operate at a very high level and his men are also present at our operational headquarters so they can react immediately if something is not being done right,” Vukcevic said. The war crimes prosecutor stressed that the authorities were searching for Mladic and Goran Hadzic with the same intensity. Vladimir Vukcevic (Tanjug)
