Leader of the Democratic Party (DS) Boris Tadic said Saturday that the DS was not aware of any party that could administrate the state better than it does. “When it becomes easy for those who are in power (to run the country) we may cede the control of the country to others. Until then, we certainly will not do such a thing,” he stressed at a session of the DS Main Board in Belgrade. Tadic: Only DS competent to run country According to hum, the other pretenders to power are not competent enough. “The incompetent actions of the DS's political opponents are assessed on the basis of what they have done over the past two decades,” Tadic underlined. The DS leader added that after the party's session in December it would be necessary to draw the line and see what had been done so far, and recalled that the new presidential and parliamentary elections should be held in 2012. Tadic has assessed that the Serbian government could have achieved more, but that the most important achievement lies in the fact that thanks to the government's efforts, Serbia managed to escape the fate of many regional and European countries. “The conclusion we can draw today is that the worst-case scenario, that of the country going bankrupt and becoming unable to meet its financial obligations, has been prevented,” he said and pointed out that everything that the citizens had to go through during the crisis had to be endured for the sake of a better future. “It is of utmost importance that Serbia does not overstep the limit of indebtedness,” the DS leader explained and congratulated the government for preventing this from happening. “Overstepping the indebtedness limit would bring us short-lived benefits, but we would have to pay extortionate costs later on,” he pointed out. According to Tadic, excessive indebtedness would boost popularity of the politicians in the leading coalition, but the burden of the economy's recovery from the crisis would pass on to the next generation. “I know that I will have to pay a steep political price for telling citizens the truth, but that is a price I am willing to pay,” Tadic stated. He expressed belief that if Serbian citizens behaved in a disciplined and reasonable manner, the country could emerge from the crisis, which hit the global economy and industry as a tsunami, without suffering any major damage. The DS leader also addressed the Serbian government by saying that it would have to ensure an uninterrupted social dialogue in the future, and also called upon trade unions to renounce unreasonable requests related to salary raise and years of employment. He said that the country would see better days in 2012, when the living standard should be visibly heightened. Tadic concluded that the forwarding of Serbia's EU candidacy application to the European Commission (EC) was an important step forward, and added that the comments the EC included in its last annual report would be taken into consideration with utmost seriousness. The president repeated that the government had already implemented extensive social reform, and added that a number of system laws should be adopted next year, which would include the law on restitution, law on party funding and law on sports.
