Official concerned over KFOR reduction

Ministry for Kosovo State Secretary Oliver Ivanovic has expressed his concern over the announced reduction of the NATO-led KFOR troops. Ivanovic said on Tuesday in Kosovska Mitrovica after meeting with KFOR's commander, Erhart Buehler, that he believed Kosovo police, KPS, could not take responsibility of the Serb enclaves - south of the Ibar River - and Serb Orthodox churches and monasteries there. He also told the KFOR commander that the Serb communities sees the security of churches and monasteries as very important, and that should the number of troops be reduced, those remaining must focus on protecting Serbs in unprotected areas, and around monasteries. Buehler told Ivanovic that KFOR recently handed over the security of the Zociste and Budisavce monasteries to local police, and that the same will be done with the Gorioc monastery near Istok. The Serbian Orthodox shrines in Kosovo have in the past been attacked by ethnic Albanians. People in Kosovo should know that KFOR will help establish lasting stability and security in the region, Buehler said and added that Kosovo citizens also need to show support so that stability and peace could be established through joint efforts. On Tuesday, the KFOR commander visited the armed forces in the Kosovska Mitrovica region, and had several informal meetings with local representatives and Mayor of southern, ethnic Albanian part of divided Kosovska Mitrovica, Avni Kastrati.
