The Bosniak Democratic Community (BDZ) supported by Chief Mufti of the Islamic Community in Serbia Muamer Zukorlic will soon be registered. BDZ, which is believed to be Zukorlic’s "instrument", will soon be entered into political parties’ registry, writes Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti. "Mufti's party to be registered soon" This could not only affect the balance of political parties in Serbia's southwestern Raska district (Sandzak), but also future coalitions in the country, says the newspaper. The mufti recently made it clear that he was ready to support a "Serbian party which would guarantee Muslims their rights and freedoms". This has only heated up long-running speculations that he already formed a silent alliance with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). However, both sides claim that such a political pact between a party and a religious organization is impossible. “Ignoring Mufti Zukorlic is a terrible mistake. Just as I want to agree with the SPC (Serbian Orthodox Church) to solve some issues in the society, I want an agreement with the Islamic community too. This wish of mine does not mean party partnerships, because it is impossible between a party and a religious community. But it would be very important to us if we could make those political agreements that would enable even more support in Sandzak for the realization of the policy we’ve been insisting on,” LDP leader Cedomir Jovanovic told Vecernje Novosti. Spokesman for the Islamic Community in Serbia Samir Tandir told the paper that political agreements were not in the institution’s scope of action. “We will support every option which will enable for a normal life to Bosniaks and relieve them of brutal discrimination they are exposed to now. And experience tells us that those who were supported by us always used to win the elections in Sandzak,” he stressed, but did not want to say whether this option was in fact LDP. Aside from BDZ, Zukorlic is also supported by the Sandzak National Party (NPS), Sandzak National Movement and Democratic Party of Sandzak from Priboj. These parties backed him during the elections for the Bosniak National Council, writes the newspaper. Zukorlic's Islamic organization has a rival - the Islamic Community of Serbia, led by Mufti Adem Zilkic. Recently, Zukorlic spoke for Al Jazeera television to demand autonomy for Sandzak, and "internatization" of the issues related to the region.
