European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin in Novi Sad on Friday attended the founding session of the Danube Media network (DaMe). He said that fostering closer ties between Serbia and the European Union is being realized through respect of the freedom of the media and their cooperation, among other things. Serbia's EU bid and state of media DaMe is a great opportunity for Serbia's EU accession, and a good message to all the Balkan countries, as the media are important in fostering regional cooperation, he said. The latest report on the state of the media in the Western Balkans is worrying, the freedom of the media has deteriorated throughout the region and Serbia's rating, for instance, dropped from the 62nd to the 85th place, he said. Monopolies and excessive presence of yellow press are the greatest obstacles to the freedom of the media in Serbia, Kacin noted. Jelko Kacin (Tanjug, file)
