A Slovenian MEP says 38 other members have requested to join the informal parliamentary group dubbed "Friends of Serbia". Member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (EP) Zoran Taler was the official upon whose initiative the group was formed last month. "Serbia unfairly neglected at EP" The establishment of this group seemed to me as a simple idea - a way to make a basis for strengthening communication with Serbia, political and other, stated Taler, the former Slovenian foreign minister and current EP Rapporteur for Macedonia. Taler also noted that Serbia is unfairly neglected in the EP and other European institutions. He pointed out that the group Friends of Serbia, which gathers members of the EP from different states and political groups, can be a link in the chain of intensive communication and opinion exchange among the three main EU institutions: the Parliament, Commission and Council. Taler noted that Serbia is now in a really interesting period after the U-turn made by its successful diplomacy, primarily that of Serbian President Boris Tadic. The EP group Friends of Serbia also includes Slovenian socialist Tanja Fajon, former Slovak foreign minister Eduard Kukan, Romanian socialists Victor Bostinaru and Adrian Severin, as well as Slovenian liberal and EP Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin, and Austrian member of the Greens and EP Rapporteur for Kosovo Urlike Lunacek, the Belgrade-based daily Politika reports.
