Wathelet, Dacic: Visa regime not threatened However, the citizens need to be informed that all those who seek asylum in the Union member states will be returned to Serbia, Melchior Wathelet, Belgian State Secretary for the Budget, Migration and Asylum Policy and Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic stated on Thursday. Wathelet said after his meeting with Dacic, which was also attended by the ambassadors of Belgium, Sweden and Germany to Serbia, that European officials did not discuss an abolition of the White Schengen with Serbia since it is working well for the majority of the country's citizens. "We need to stand up to those who abuse that and our common interest is to prevent it," the Belgian state secretary said, adding that citizens of Serbia are welcome to the EU as tourists. Those who seek asylum for economic reasons will be rejected and will have to return home, said Wathelet. According to the data Dacic presented, about 7,500 citizens of Serbia have requested asylum in Sweden, Germany and Belgium since the beginning of the year. Most of those asylum seekers, about 5,000 of them, are in Sweden, while about 1,900 are in Germany and between 600 and 700 in Belgium, mainly ethnic Albanians, Roma and residents of Sandzak in southwestern Serbia. “People should be informed that work migrations and seeking false asylum are not justified. Those people will be returned rather promptly since we have signed the readmission agreements,” said Dacic. He also said that the Serbian government will launch a campaign to inform the population that it is not possible to get the asylum in the EU countries. Also, control of tourist groups traveling with travel agencies will be stepped up at Serbia's border crossings. Wathelet and Dacic in Belgrade today (Beta)
