A special working group tasked with setting up the conditions needed to establish academic institutions in Bujanovac and Presevo has given its recommendations. The southern towns are located in the volatile ethnically mixed region in southern Serbia. New high education facility in south The working group recommended Wednesday that an economics college be opened in Bujanovac. Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Milan Markovic told a news conference after the group's meeting that the recommendation was adopted by consensus, and that it was now up to the Ministry of Education to have its say, but that all the requirements for the school were there. "We will leave everything to those who are involved in ethnic minority education, because we do not wish to turn it into a political issue," said Markovic. He hopes the first students will be enrolled next year, and that the college will serve to bring Serbs, ethnic Albanians and Roma closer together. Medvedja, another municipality in southern Serbia, already has a law and economics school, which are officially part of the Nis University, the minister noted, adding that all the books were in Albanian and interpreters were present during classes. "The Serbian government is aware of the education problems in Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, particularly those related to the Albanian ethnic minority," Markovic stated, adding that the recently established Albanian Ethnic Council was helping to find the solution. Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe High Commissioner on National Minorities Knut Vollebaek said education was important both for individuals and entire regions, because it helped their development, integration and stability. It is good that a college for ethnic Albanians is going to be established, said Vollebaek, adding that the school would be multiethnic and open to all the people in the region.
