Serbian President Boris Tadic today will attend in Nicosia the marking of the 50th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Cyprus. Cyprus gained independence from the British colonial rule in 1960. President attends Cyprus celebrations On the occasion of the anniversary, President Dimitris Christofias said that the anniversary marks the efforts and the modern historic path of the country and its people. It marks our successes and achievements, as well as tragedies that our country had experienced over the 50 years of its existence, said Christofias. The Republic of Cyprus marks 50 years of its existence, but, unfortunately, its territory and people remain divided by the force of arms, said the Cypriot president. This tragic situation gives a sad tone to the joyful celebration of the 50th anniversary of independence, said President Christofias in his message, forwarded to Tanjug by the Embassy of Cyprus in Belgrade. He said that the Republic of Cyprus remains determined to persevere in its struggle for unification. The island of Cyprus was divided in two parts, northern - Turkish, and southern - Greek part, after the Turkish troops invaded Cyprus in 1974. The Green Line, dividing the island, is still under the control of the United Nations forces. The latest round of talks on unification started in 2008 and they are still in progress. In 2004, the Republic of Cyprus was accepted in the European Union, while the Turkish part of the island is recognized only by the official Ankara.
