Unions demand withdrawal of pension bill

The Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS) held a protest in Krusevac, central Serbia, on Thursday. They demanded that the government withdraw their pension and disability insurance bill, and they pointed out the difficult financial situation workers were in. Unions demand withdrawal of pension bill The SSSS is not satisfied with the pension bill, especially the parts of it referring to the changes in the default retirement age, accelerated retirement plan, pension growth and disability pensions. The unions demand a social dialogue, collective agreements that would be implemented consistently and a strategy for the privatization of government companies. SSSS President Ljubisav Orbovic told Tanjug he was pleased with the protest, adding that it was supported by other union associations as well. Orbovic was happy with the number of people who showed up for the protest, but added the goal was to save their energy for the Belgrade protest. According to him, the SSSS demands that the minimum wage "does not go below the level of decency and is able to keep up with the inflation." The dates of future protests will depend on the pace of the bill's adoption procedure. The planned locations for the protests are Nis, Novi Sad and Kragujevac. The SSSS will organize a protest in Belgrade if the parliament does not accept their demands. (Beta)
