Education union officials meet with PM The increase in salaries will be followed by a rise in inflation and the GDP, Serbian Education Minister Zarko Obradovic stated after the meeting, which was also attended by Serbian Minister of Finance Diana Dragutinovic. He pointed out that the two parties agreed to sign a protocol on salaries before adoption of the 2011 budget, adding that it was stated that the education system should be granted more funds. All other issues, besides financial ones, will be addressed by the ministry (of education) and the unions, he said, adding that the issue of reinstating awards and bonuses for years of work in education has remained opened. The main topic of conversation will be the unions' demand for increase of salaries, and problems in the education sector. Obradovic said earlier that the prime minister will tell the union officials about the agreement reached with the IMF. Three out of four education unions want the teachers' salaries raised in October, and also demand to have "jubilee awards" paid from the budget. The Association of the Union of Education Workers, which held a protest walk in Belgrade yesterday, however, said their demands are different. This union's leader Leonardo Erdelji said that the country was lacking an education strategy, and that they wanted changes to laws, reforms to monitoring services, and changes to the collective agreement.
