Canada sees Serbia as an important part of the region and is willing to promote bilateral military cooperation, Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay said. At a joint press conference with Serbia's Minister of Defense Dragan Sutanovac, Mackay said that Canada believes that the entire region needs to integrate into the Euro-Atlantic institutions. Canadian MoD in Serbia Mackay praised Serbia's actions in NATO's Partnership for Peace program, stressing that Canada wants to support the activities of Serbia in the program. The Canadian minister said that he and his Serbian counterpart had open talks on ways of promoting not only military, but also economic relations between the two countries. The talks also focused on Canadian companies that are interested in investing in Serbia, MacKay said. Sutanovac and MacKay supported exchanging officers from the two countries for schooling. Sutanovac said that the Serbian Defense Ministry would like to see Serbia's officers studying in Canada, and vice versa. Serbia's Defense Minister pointed out that it has been a long time since a high delegation of the Canadian Ministry of Defense last visited Serbia, which is why MacKay's visit is very important. The discussion also included military-economic cooperation, in view of the fact that some of the domestic defense industry factories are already exporting to the Canadian market, he said. Sutanovac said that the exchange of experiences regarding participation in peacekeeping operations was also one of the topics. Serbia is currently involved in six peacekeeping operations while Canada participates in 16, and Serbia has a desire to learn from its Canadian friends, he said. Sutanovac said that the two countries plan to sign a defense agreement soon.

Mackay praised Serbia's actions in NATO's Partnership for Peace program, stressing that Canada wants to support the activities of Serbia in the program.
