KFOR's decision to hand the responsibility for guarding Serb monasteries in Kosovo over to Kosovo police jeopardizes the safety of the monasteries. This is according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko. Moscow weighs in on monastery security Nesterenko spoke in Moscow on Thursday, urging for United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 to be respected in regard to the above issue. "We share the concern of the Serbian authorities and Serbian Orthodox Church that such moves could contribute additionally to the tension in the security area, and that they might increase the mistrust of the Serb population in the readiness of the international peace-making forces in Kosovo to fulfill their obligations," said Nesterenko. Moscow is confident that KFOR's decision, which Nesterenko pointed out was made without a consent of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), will jeopardize the preservation of the Serbian monasteries in Kosovo and will make the functioning of the SPC in the province more difficult, Russia's news agency Itar-Tass reported. Nesterenko recalled that many of those monasteries are part of the world cultural heritage and that they are included in UNESCO's list. "We expect the situation regarding the Serb religious sites in Kosovo to be resolved based on a dialogue with Belgrade and the SPC and within the framework of the existing international agreements, as well as in keeping with UN Security Council resolution 1244," the Russian diplomat underscored.
