UK supports Serbia's EU ambitions

UK Minister for Europe David Lidington told Deutsche Welle radio on Friday that his country supports Serbia’s aspirations of attaining EU membership. As far as Kosovo is concerned, the UK government is waiting for the ruling of the International Court of Justice on the legality of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence, Lidington added. UK supports Serbia's EU ambitions The UK has recognized Kosovo, but hopes that the ICJ ruling will lead to dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina on issues important to ordinary citizens, he said. The latest incidents in Mitrovica are an example of how sensitive the situation in the region is, and it is not much better in Bosnia-Herzegovina or in Macedonia, Lidington said. The European Union member-states have to accept responsibility and support the Balkan countries on their paths of EU integration, and the Balkan countries, for their part, must implement the necessary reforms and find ways to reach peaceful solutions, Lidington said.
