President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy is visiting Pristina today for meeting with Kosovo Albanian officials. Ahead of his trip, he told Albanian language daily Zeri that the fight against corruption and organized crime is the main precondition Kosovo needs to meet if it wants to achieve progress in any important area, including the accession to European institutions. "Fight against corruption crucial for Kosovo" Van Rompuy said that the European Commission has made it clear to Kosovo what they need to do so as to make progress, and stressed that he is optimistic about Kosovo making big steps forward. The fight against organized crime and corruption is of key importance to Kosovo's development. The functional rule of law is necessary for the development of a democratic society, as well as for stimulating socioeconomic progress, the president of the European Council said. Van Rompuy also added that, among other things, Kosovo authorities have been requested to intensify the fight against corruption and organized crime and to that effect cooperate with EULEX. Rompuy is scheduled to confer with the representatives of Kosovo interim institutions and international officials in Pristina. He will also visit the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Visoki (High) Decani. This is Van Rompuy's third visit to Kosovo and Metohija, the first one since he was appointed to his present office. He had previously visited the province as Belgium's prime minister and parliament speaker.
