Council for Security points finger at Feith

The Serbian Council for National Security described the hand grenade attack in Kosovska Mitrovica as an act of terrorism perpetrated by Albanian extremists. The body, convened in Belgrade today by President Boris Tadic, also stated that EU Special Representative in Kosovo Pieter Feith should be "held responsible for the consequences of the incident". In Belgrade, the council requested from the EU and NATO to thwart any possible future attempt to unilaterally change the situation on the ground in Kosovo and Metohija, and to prevent the implementation of any acts that would strive to attempt to implement the illegal plan for northern Kosovo. The plan to bring the northern, predominantly Serb areas of the province under Pristina's control was announced earlier this year by the ICO and the Kosovo Albanian government, and was rejected both by the Serbs in the north, and by official Belgrade. The council's statement, sent to the media from the president' cabinet, also requested that the perpetrators of today's attack be swiftly apprehended and punished, and for any further attempts to violently open the offices of the temporary Kosovo institutions to be prevented. The council expressed its commitment to peace and security in Kosovo, and said that the explosive device thrown at the demonstrators in Kosovska Mitrovica was yet another violent attempt to establish the so-called new reality in Kosovo. "Today's event is a direct provocation and violation of all publicly stated positions and principles of the UN Security Council and EU, which have not endorsed the so-called plan for northern Kosovo," said the statement. The council also sent their deepest condolences to the family of the victim, Mesud Dzekovic. The local pediatrician died of the injuries he sustained in front of his family home, during a peaceful demonstration of in between 1,000 and 1,500 Serbs in the Bosnjacka Mahala neighborhood of Kosovska Mitrovica.
