EU Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fuele said that EU enlargement will remain a priority during Belgium's presidency. Belgium's presidency will face many important issues, including those regarding Western Balkans and Serbia's candidacy, he said. "EU enlargement remains priority" Belgium's presidency will will have to determine whether consensus exists among member states to ask the European Commission to state its views on Serbia's candidacy, Fuele added. "Despite the impression that some EU member states oppose further enlargement due to the global recession, it cannot be concluded from the experience so far that this process had been slowing down the economic development of old members," he said. On the contrary, enlargement means fresh opportunities and the best European approach to resolving problems, Fuele noted. "In conditions of global recession, that process provides more opportunities for overcoming the challenges the European countries are facing," he said. Integration of new members in the EU also means helping countries with a difficult historical background to become a part of the largest peace movement in Europe, he said. "The adoption of the Lisbon Treaty has removed the obstacles hindering the continuation of the enlargement process," he said.
