Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on Monday that criminal acts such as assault and rape "are usually done by repeat offenders". Dacic was quoted as saying that in order to secure an adequate system of prevention of such crimes, "it was necessary to introduce strictest punishment". Minister "regrets there's no death penalty" The minister said that the perpetrators of such crimes along with the arrest by the police and prosecution deserve also the strictest penalty, adding that educational system, media, health facilities, and others should be fully involved in contributing to prevention of such crimes. Commenting on the case of a man from Stari Ledinci, near Novi Sad, suspected of raping and murdering an eight-year girl, Dacic voiced his belied that the competent judicial authorities "will demand the strictest punishment". “I'm sorry that there is no death penalty, since it is the only appropriate punishment for such crime," the interior minister was quoted as saying.
