Political parties are campaigning in northern Kosovska Mitrovica ahead of early local elections scheduled there for May 30. The Serbian government also decided that local elections would be held on the same day in the Novo Brdo municipality. Campaign under way for local elections in K. Mitrovica Serbs in Kosovo, however, see the ballot in the ethnically divided town of Kosovska Mitrovica as more significant, since the Kosovo Albanian government in Pristina also plans to organize elections there. Less than two weeks before the voting, 13 parties and civil initiative groups have had their participation in the race confirmed. Councilors will be elected to the 30-seat local assembly. Among those that will participate are the most important ruling and opposition parties headquartered in Belgrade. Some 19,000 voters will be eligible to cast their ballots in the northern part of the town on May 30.
