MPs to discuss regional development

The Serbian parliament will meet today in Belgrade to debate changes and additions to the draft Law on Regional Development.

The Serbian parliament will meet today in Belgrade to debate changes and additions to the draft Law on Regional Development. The changes call for the formation of five regions that are equal in the number of inhabitants – Vojvodina, the Belgrade region, Sumadija and Western Serbia, Southern and Eastern Serbia, and Kosovo and Metohija. MPs to discuss regional development The government stated that the changes are meant to support equal regional development and a more effective use of the EU pre-accession funds. According to the proposed changes, every regional will be able to set up only one regional council, and 12 regional development agencies are expected to be formed, which would implement projects for equal development in Serbia. The proposed changes also call for abolishing state regional agencies, which will decrease the administration’s size during the economic crisis and cut spending, enabling better coordination and planning and a realization of development activities, said the government, which sent the draft to parliament. The second parliamentary session of the spring began on March 30. It includes 94 items on its agenda, which is the largest amount since the formation of the current parliament. So far, MPs has debated one item on the agenda: the proposed changes and additions to the Law on Refugees. (Beta, file)
