International Civilian Office (ICO) head in Kosovo Pieter Feith says the local election in northern Kosovska Mitrovica "will not be recognized". He also said that "the only valid elections" are those organized by Pristina, i.e., the Kosovo Albanian government there. "K. Mitrovica vote won't be recognized" The Serbian government has scheduled an election for municipal representatives in Kosovska Mitrovica and Novo Brdo for May 30. It dismissed the two municipal assemblies and formed provisional authorities on December 24, 2009. "As the international civilian representative, I want to stress once again that we will focus on the elections organized by Pristina authorities," Feith said in an interview with Deutsche Welle. According to Feith, who is also EU's special representative in the province, the new EU office in the northern, predominantly Serb part of the ethnically divided town of Kosovska Mitrovica, was proof of EU's commitment to complementing the "strategy for north". The plan to bring the northern areas under Pristina's control was announced by the ICO and the government in Pristina. EU officials previously said that the controversial strategy, rejected by Serbs who live in northern Kosovo and by Belgrade, was "not their document".
