The summit planned to be held in Sarajevo, at which EU and Western Balkans senior officials will meet, is expected to improve regional relations. This is according to a statement from Spanish FM Miguel Angel Moratinos, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency. "Sarajevo summit to be guided by intl. law" Moratinos said that the summit, planned for May or June, should gather all factors and sides, "with appreciation of international law and all sensitive issues". The exact date for the gathering will be announced soon, he added. He said that the Spanish EU presidency is “preparing the summit with the idea of all sides participating in the spirit of cooperation.” “We will find a way to prepare this conference on a high level and I believe that we will be able to gather all sides, stressing all important question and guided by international law,” Moratinos said. He said that the goal of the Spanish presidency is to allow everyone to share their thoughts and opinions, and to further achieve their perspective of integrating into the European Union, while improving ties and cooperation in the region. He said that he has just received a report on the Western Balkans conference held last weekend in Slovenia, which he did not attend. Moratinos stated that “all of the Western Balkan countries were not able to participate in that conference, and neither was European Council President Herman van Rompuy,” adding that “this does not mean that the meeting was unfruitful and that there was not a good exchange of opinions, good proposals and initiatives.” The Spanish minister also said that the adopted declaration at the conference “clearly shows that all the participants, us as well, gives support to the meeting on the highest level that the Spanish presidency will call in either late May or early June.” Miguel Angel Moratinos (Tanjug, file)
