Kosovo government spokesperson Memli Krasniqi said that Pristina will work on solving problems related to human rights and corruption in Kosovo. He said that the Kosovo government “takes very seriously” the report of the U.S. State Department on progress in Kosovo, and that it is content with the fact that the report did state that progress has been achieved over the last year. “Kosovo solving corruption problems” Krasniqi said that the government has taken concrete steps to combat corruption and other weaknesses that were mentioned, adding that a special corruption sector will be opened by the Special Prosecution, which is a “concrete and essential step” taken by the government. The opposition in Kosovo stated that the government is corrupt and that there is no political or institutional will for overcoming the problems mentioned in the report. Vice-President of the opposition Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, Ahmet Isufi, said that the report confirms that there is corruption in Kosovo that has gone over “normal levels.” “That is why this government, which is one of the most corrupted institutions in Kosovo, has contributed to the fall of economic development and the poverty of the citizens in drastic measures,” Isufi said. Isufi said that based on statistics, corruption has increased in Kosovo by 35 percent, and that the courts that are supposed to fight corruption are corrupted themselves. Vice-President of the opposition New Kosovo Alliance Ibrahim Makoli said that the report is realistic, because it shows the real situation in two important sectors, corruption and the court system. “Because of the lack of police and institutional will for the fight against corruption, no progress is being made in achieving legal solutions according to European standards,” Makoli said, adding that the Kosovo institutions only have a “verbal readiness” to fight corruption.
