Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said that Serbia can join the EU by 2014. He said that that Brussels should support the unblocking of the Stabilization and Association Agreement with Serbia and make Serbia a candidate for EU membership. “Serbia can join EU by 2014” “As far as the recently submitted candidacy request by Serbia to the EU, it should be considered as soon as possible and as in the case of other Western Balkans countries, in a just and essential way. Serbia belongs in the European family and it should receive the position it deserves as soon as possible, because it will be the best thing for Serbia and Europe,” Droutsas said. He said that the Agenda 2014 plan presents Athens’ initiative for getting the Western Balkans into the EU by that date. “It is over-ambitious, but it is possible,” he said. He said that there are two goals in the plan. “First, to restore the interest of the Union in the region, and second, for the date of 2014, with its great symbolism, to encourage the countries of the region to intensify their aspirations towards the EU. The final result of course continues to depend on the interested parties, but, it is equally important for the will of the EU to be visible,” Droutsas said.
