ICO chief in Kosovo Pieter Feith said that the integration of northern Kosovo will be done without imposed solutions. Feith said that there will also be no force used and that there will be consultations held with Belgrade regarding all issues. North Kosovo integration “won’t be imposed” “Our intention is to try to offer the citizens of northern Kosovo better living conditions and the best possible public services. In this case, this strategy will include other individuals who are on the ground and with whom we will try to reach the citizens of the north,” Feith said. “The basic principle is that we will ask for acceptance and that we will not impose anything, if they want to accept the new services then it is good, but if there is no interest, then we will reevaluate our decision,” he said. “We are building on experience from the local elections held in the fall in the municipalities south of the Ibar, where we saw great interest from the Serb community for our proposals,” Feith said. “We have to look at this with cool heads and clear minds. We are in a part of the world, or region, where a European perspective exists, and I think that people have the right to the best possible public services,” he added. He said that the goal is to strengthen the rule of law, improve social and economic conditions for people who live in the north and form the new municipality of North Mitrovica and give more autonomy to the people who live there. Feith added that Kosovo recognition is not a formal condition for Serbia entering the EU, but regional cooperation will be one. “We can accept that Serbia will not recognize Kosovo, but a minimum cooperation on the regional level must exist,” Feith said.
