Roman Catholic Church leader Pope Benedict XVI congratulated the new Serbian Orthodox Church leader Patriarch Irinej on his election. The Pope said that he hopes that the two churches will be able to increase cooperation. Pope Benedict XVI congratulates new patriarch Cardinal Walter Casper, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, also congratulated Patriarch Irinej. “May the Lord grant you many spiritual gifts, wisdom, strength and determination to enable you to service the Church of Christ with the same love,” the statement added. Patriarch Daniel of Romania’s Orthodox Church also congratulate the new patriarch. “In the name of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the priests, monks and believers, we congratulate the Serbian Orthodox Church on the election of its new patriarch,” the message from Patriarch Daniel states. Patriarch Daniel also expressed wishes to continue and improve cooperation between the Romanian and Serbian Orthodox Churches.
