Serbia could become candidate for EU membership by the end of this year, says Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic. This could happen if the EU questionnaire is sent by the spring, and filled out by the summer, he told Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti. “Serbia could be candidate by end of year” Djelic also believes that Serbia would finish answering the questions “in record time”, and added that “we already have the questions that were given to our neighbors before in our hands”. “As for the membership negotiations it is not likely that they would start before we complete the cooperation with the Hague [Tribunal],” said he, and added that this was “also the case with Croatia”. “We should certainly look to avoid the fate of Macedonia, which has had candidate status since 2005, and is yet to start negotiations,” Djelic stated. Asked about the Greek initiative to have Serbia in the EU by 2014, Djelic said that it was important that Greece was supported in this by Italy, “and to some degree by Austria”, but added that “the timetable is on the edge of technical possibilities”. He also said the EU countries’ economic circumstances would also affect such a decision. “If unemployment were on the decline in the EU, the enlargement idea would be more acceptable. EC Vice President Jacques Barrot believes we will need five to seven years,” said Djelic.
