The Serbian government recommended on Tuesday to the Public Health Institute to halt further procurement of swine flu vaccines. This was confirmed by Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic, who spoke in Belgrade this afternoon. The ministry will propose to the government further measures after analyzing the epidemic situation by February 20, he said. “This is the best solution, as 855,700 doses have been delivered, of which about 130,000 have been used,” Milosavljevic said. Since December 17, about 1.7 percent of Serbia's population have been inoculated, he explained. “The vaccination will continue and the available quantity will be sufficient until mid-February,” the minister concluded. Earlier in the day, Jugohemija, the company that imported the Swiss-made vaccines, said that any changes to the contract could have “serious financial consequences for the company and for the consumers in Serbia”. Jugohemija said in its statement that it bought the vaccines from Novartis according to a request from the state, and that it took over obligations both toward the country’s healthcare system and the manufacturer. “Initially, a million units were reserved, and based on the Working Group’s plan of vaccination, this was later increased to three million,” the statement reminded.
