Serbian Army (VS) CoGS Lt. Gen. Miloje Miletic visited the troops in the Ground Safety Zone (GSZ) this Friday. The zone stretches along the administrative line between Kosovo and central Serbia. Army chief: GSZ stable, but sensitive The situation there, Miletic told reporters, was “stable, but sensitive”. The general toured the southern-most VS base in the area, Cvore, near the village of Debce, located seven kilometers from Presevo, and 18 kilometers from Gnjilane. The base is controlled by the VS 4th Land Forces Brigade, deployed in the municipalities of Bujanovac, Presevo and Vranje. “Along the full length of the Ground Safety Zone the situation is very sensitive, which is confirmed by the events in the village of Rehovac [sic] in the municipality of Kursumlija. Even the smallest, unintentionally caused incident always takes on great significance, which urges all those deployed in the zone, as well as KFOR on the other side, to approach their tasks in an even more responsible manner,” Miletic said. He added that local self-governments in the area also have “great responsibility” for the events in the GSZ, and urged them to work more on building trust in their communities. “The Serbian Army is strictly adhering to the rules and proscribed procedures in the Ground Safety Zone and in no instance is it going beyond the framework of the Constitution and the law. Lives were not endangered in the village of Rehovac, and the investigation into the events there is being conducted by MUP,” the general said, in reference to the recent incidents in a Serb village close to the line when locals reported shooting and other disturbances. The total length of the zone is 142 kilometers, while the space it covers amounts to 500 sq kilometers, where the Army has 21 bases and six commandeered facilities. The 4th Brigade officers and soldiers informed Miletic that they have excellent cooperation with Serbian police (MUP) units, also deployed in the area, as well as with NATO-led KFOR force in Kosovo. The general also heard that his troops based in Cvore last year had regular meetings with KFOR, and organized “14 simultaneous patrols”. Lt. Gen. Miletic in the GSZ today (FoNet)
