U.S. Embassy in Belgrade Charge d'Affaires Jennifer Brush says that in the Balkans her country's priorities are regional cooperation and stability. In this, Serbia has a leading role, she told Tanjug news agency in an interview. "Stability, cooperation U.S. priorities" Brush said that Washington had been a little surprised with the timing of Serbia's submitting of candidacy application for EU membership, taking into account that other options had been considered. "But now that it has been done, we intend to support this candidacy as much as we can as a country which is not a EU member," Brush said. She said that Washington also expect that Serbia would continue cooperating with the Hague Tribunal which was a necessary precondition for the ratification of the Stabilization and Association Agreement. "It would be best if Goran Hadzic and Ratko Mladic were arrested. But if that is not possible, we will continue closely monitoring the efforts of Serbian security services and judicial bodies to find the remaining fugitives," she added. Referring to the relations between the U.S. and Serbia in 2009, and particularly to the visit of U.S. Vice-President Joseph Biden in May and his message that Serbia was a factor of stability and solutions in the region, Brush said that improvement of bilateral and regional relations had also been the main topic of discussion between Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last month. "Our priorities in the Balkans are regional cooperation and stability, so a lot of attention was devoted to the role that Serbia is to play in that sense," the diplomat underscored.
