FM Vuk Jeremic says that "there is no doubt after 2009" that Serbia is the region's leader, "and its strategic point". According to him, the country established this role for itself "not only with the visits of the Russian president and the U.S. vice president, and that fact that the biggest central and southeastern European leaders' summit in the last ten years was held in Novi Sad". "Serbia, region's leader" "It is also because it has become obvious that the solving of any problem in the region cannot be approached without Serbia's engagement," Jeremic said in an interview for Belgrade weekly NIN. He added that this relates to the situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the solving of the future status of Kosovo and Metohija. "Many thought that it was possible to circumvent Serbia, but events have proved that this is not the case," said the minister. He repeated that the country's relations with its neighbors suffered "great temptations at one point", but stressed that this happened "because of the decisions made by those neighbors". "We did not make moves that directly jeopardized the interests of those countries, rather, some of them did that to us. Despite that, we treated this in such a way to avoid endangering the country's dignity, and the stability of the region." Jeremic said that regional relations were also on the agenda as he recently met with U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, and that both agreed that Serbia's role was "key for peace and stability of the region". The minister also commented on Croatia's participation in the Kosovo ICJ case, where that country defended the Kosovo Albanian unilateral independence declaration, to describe it as a "false testimony", that amounted to a flagrant interference into Serbia's internal affairs. Jeremic also rejected criticism that Serbia's diplomacy, due to its many proprieties, is "schizophrenic" and can therefore "not be successful". "Serbia's foreign policy must be judged by its results. At the start of the year we defined our priority tasks: the diplomatic battle for Kosovo, joining the EU, and regional leadership," he said, and added that "significant success" had been achieved in all three areas. "In order to make all this happen, we went for energetic cooperation with the whole world. That may be difficult for some to follow, but we have achieved undeniable success with our approach," Jeremic concluded. Vuk Jeremic (Tanjug, file)
