Serbian Ambassador to the United States Vladimir Petrovic said that 2009 was a year of improved relations between the two countries. He told Voice of America that Washington had strongly supported Serbia’s decision to apply for the EU membership. Serbian ambassador to U.S. sees better relations “When Serbia made a historic step and submitted its application for the candidacy, the [U.S.] Congress and the White House sent positive signals saying that it was something they were approving. I think that their influence in the matter has been significant,” the diplomat was quoted as saying. He singled out as the most important moments in 2009 the “exceptionally successful” visit of U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden to Belgrade in May and Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, Minister of Defense Dragan Sutanovac and Minister of Justice Snezana Malovic’s visits to Washington. “The military relations are very favorable and visible in the cooperation with the National Guard of Ohio, but also with the entire U.S. military, and in the fact that we have officers receiving education in the U.S.,” Petrovic said, and pointed out that minister of defense’s visit and meeting with his American counterpart Robert Gates had elevated the cooperation to an "even higher level". Asked about the economy sector ties, the ambassador said that U.S. administration’s good relations with Belgrade were a signal to American companies that it was good to work with Serbia. “The Serbian embassy in Washington insists on it and we are trying to give a push to the economic cooperation,” he said, pointing out that American companies operating in Serbia stayed despite the financial crises. “Serbia has confirmed its leadership role, not only in the region but in the world, with some joint operations with U.S. and other authorities which managed to stop organized crime,” the Serbian ambassador was quoted as saying.
