Minorities encouraged to join police force

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic and Vojvodina Assembly Speaker Sandor Egeresi have called on ethnic minorities to join the police force. “The doors of the police are open to members of all national communities,” Dacic said in the town of Backa Palanka. Minorities encouraged to join police force The northern Serbian province is home to some 20 ethnic minority communities. Egeresi said that Vojvodina has launched an initiative for organizing language courses for police officers in multi-national regions. He said that in these areas, it is necessary to promote the work of the Police Academy in order for people from as many national communities as possible to enroll. Egeresi added that the number of inter-ethnic incidents in Vojvodina has significantly decreased thanks to effective cooperation between the province and Serbia's Interior Ministry and police, MUP. This official said that he reached agreement with MUP that the provincial and local self-administration should be consulted before new local police chiefs are appointed. Dacic said that good inter-ethnic relations have been preserved in Vojvodina and that institutions of the international community have come to the same conclusion.
