The government will decide on Saturday when Serbia's EU candidacy application will be submitted, President Boris Tadic said. Tadic, who is leading the state delegation at the final part of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, stated that he would attend the government meeting on Saturday and submit his report about the talks he had recently with officials of the EU member-states. "Decision on candidacy status application on Saturday" The President stressed that there should not be any speculatation on the exact date on which the candidacy application would be submitted. “The date should serve its purpose, meaning that it should be submitted once we decide that the candidacy will have a positive outcome,” he said. “The next logical step is the submission of candidacy application. This process should be as fast as possible. However, the amount of time is not the most important thing, the goal is, and that is full-fledged EU membership,” Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said. He stated that Serbia had made great progress on its path toward the EU this year, and that the government formed by the coalition led by the Democratic Party (DS) and the Socialist Party of Serbia's (SPS) coalition was key to the success. He said that European integration is not only a political decision, but also a question of meeting European standards and criteria. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told daily Vecernje Novosti that Serbia should apply before December 25. There is speculation that with the support of presiding Sweden, Belgrade could apply for candidacy before the end of the year, despite the fact that all EU member-states do not support the move. During his recent visit to Belgrade, Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said that Serbia should wait for the ratification of the Stabilization and Association Agreement before applying, which could happen in June 2010, he said. Sources in Brussels explained that there will be no negative ramifications if Serbia applies early, adding that the worst that could happen is that the application may be filed away until the right time arrives.
